Deceived by Beauty

Good Morning Girls!  In college I was a Resident Adviser.  I remember the day all of the freshmen were moving in.  My girlfriend and I were working in the lobby helping the newbies get settled.  I was talking to a parent, reassuring her that her baby was going to be just fine when "he" walked in.  We'll call him Joe.  Joe was beautiful.  He had this goofy smile that said "you'll never guess what I just did".  He had a sign on his forehead blinking "danger!  danger!"   He also had the body of a Greek god.  My girlfriend and I were shooting each other eyes from across the room , making sure we were both seeing the same thing.  Well, the parent I was trapped by just kept babbling on and on about her poor little freshman, and so I missed the chance to go over and check in (and check out) this mystery boy.  Later in the day we cornered his RA and got the goods on him.  We found out he was here on scholarship on the wrestling team (explains the body).  My friend and I suddenly took an interest in wrestling.  We started going to the matches (is that what you call them).  We started "hanging out" on his floor.  We would find out what parties he was going to , and just happen to show up.  We were waiting for the perfect time to meet him (and we were also still deciding which one of us got to be the one to go out with this Greek god).  Then one day, it happened.  Joe locked himself out of his room....and I happened to be the one on key duty.  My friend called me from the office and said "you are never going to believe who is locked out of their room.  It's Joe, and he's waiting for you by his door."  Well I got up there and just about passed out.  My friend had neglected to tell me Joe had just come from the showers.   So there he was, goofy smile, danger sign on forehead, and wrapped in a towel.  The other Greek gods were smiling down on me!  So, before I let him in I just started talking.  I mean, he wasn't going anywhere right?  Now, I know this story is shocking to some of you, but remember, I was still a pagan baby, a heathen, I did not know the Lord.  So anyway, we talked for a few minutes, and I let him in, after he asked me out that is.  So that weekend I went out with Joe.  Guess what.  He couldn't hold a conversation to save his life.  He could however drink a fifth of Jack Daniels and pass out on the floor.  He was dumb (or least he acted like it) as a box of rocks.  I went out with him a few more times until I could not take it anymore.  My friend had renamed him egghead....not a typical name for a Greek god.  So what's the point of this funny story?  Well, I'm sure you have all had similar experiences (ok maybe not exactly the same).  You are attracted to someone and then they open their mouth and have nothing to offer.  The more they talk, the less attractive they become.  I've also experienced the opposite.  I get to know someone who isn't necessarily considered beautiful by the world's standards, but the more you get to know them, the more and more beautiful they become.  Soon all you see is a beautiful person inside and out.  That is because inner beauty can override external flaws.  However, outward appearance cannot cover internal lack of character.  The truly beautiful people are the ones that know who they are in Christ.  They can light up a room and bring a smile to everyone they come into contact with!  So Girls, go touch up your internal lip gloss.....it will get you further than any designer handbag!

Proverbs 31:30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.

Love you all-
Jen
